FOR AGES 12 and UP

Knitting a hat is the perfect challenge for a novice knitter. Aimée will teach you to read a pattern, cast on without twisting, and understand how gauge affects fit. In our second session, you’ll learn to use double-pointed needles with confidence, knitting two different decreases and creating an elegant finish to your hat.

PrerequisitesMust be able to knit and purl. Able to use a constant tensioning style

Homework:  Before class, work a swatch as follows:

Using your worsted weight yarn and US 6 (4mm) needles, cast on 22 sts.   Knit in pattern for 2”.

This is the pattern, known as 2/2 ribbing:

Right side:  (k2, p2) five times, k2.

Wrong side: (p2, k2) five times, p2.

Bind off loosely and measure your swatch before blocking.  Make a note of length and width.  Next, block your swatch:   Soak your swatch in cool water for 15 minutes.  Blot your swatch with a towel and lay flat to dry without pinning or stretching. Once dry, your swatch should measure 4”.   Bring this swatch to class, along with your needles. If your swatch doesn’t measure 4”, be prepared to buy needles that will help you get the correct gauge.
